I had the pleasure of meeting miss Bunny Bissoux during my last trip to Tokyo. We shared some mutual friends, and met at a dinner party in Koenji. After I learned that Bunny was also an illustrator, shooting for her dreams in one of my favorite parts of Tokyo, I quickly found out we freakishly had a lot in common.

Love for super eclectic vintage fashion? Check.
Maintaining an Etsy shop through our family back home over sea's while in Tokyo? Check.
Collector of weird vintage toys? Double check! (Thank you Battle Trolls!)

Ahem..Strangeness aside, Bunny is also a great illustrator and artist. I wanted to do my own illustration of Bunny as you can see on the first and last picture. You better be sure I was going to include the iconic hair bows!

Bunny has a blog, but that isn't enough. Bunny Bissoux basically has every form of online ANYTHING, which is awesome, because you can find her work regardless of what social networking site you prefer!

Bunny is from the UK, but currently residing in Japan. She has worked with various projects, zines, shops, t-shirt collaborations, etc. She even sold vintage trading cards online!

One thing that I think is cool about her artwork is that you can tell her characters are always obsessing over something. A lover of people with strange fascinations, the illustration style is quirky and fun, but not too childish, definitely with a bit of an edge that is really great.

Tokyo Take on Thom Browne FW 2012

I just recently saw the Thom Browne Fall Winter 2012 Menswear Collection. It was really intense, a lot of studs, dark colors, but the most interesting thing to me were the massive, linebacker-like shoulder pads the models were wearing. Sometimes when I'm creating new art, I am inspired by certain specific things, or even trends. I may see something, and think, "I haven't seen that brought back in fashion in awhile", and then I wonder how I could incorporate that into an illustration, with my own twist. I remember seeing another fashion illustration somewhere with vintage jackets and large shoulder pads, and started thinking about them.

It may sound weird and random, but after I saw this collection, it is interesting to think about how shoulder pads can either be viewed as masculine or feminine. Typically, one might think of broad shoulders as being a form of masculinity or power. Hence, the high class, intense, triangle-shoulderpad-wearing working woman of the 1980's. So for me personally, I usually associated shoulder pads as something feminine, especially seeing my Mom shove them in before going to church on Sunday mornings when I was a small child.

With this new collection, as "conceptual" as it may seem, will we see huge shoulder pads coming back for menswear within the next coming seasons, or years? Usually, Tokyo Japan is always one of the first cities to start wearing a new trend that many think they couldn't pull off. (For example, the high platform converse and shoes that are popping up all over the fashion blog world were started again first in Harajuku and Koenji, by the way.) So, this is my take on a Tokyo street fashion inspired illustration while yes, wearing those ginormous shoulder pads.

Aside from this illustration, I wanted to include some sketches from my personal sketchbook that I used when I was in Tokyo.

These were all quick doodles I would make on the go. I carried my sketchbook with me everywhere...To work, shopping, hanging out with friends, to events, anything. When I had free time, I would soak in inspiration from the city, but mostly the people. Sometimes I would just sit on the street and sketch for a long time, watching people go by. Other times, I when out and about with friends, I would just jot down ideas on the train ride home. Usually, when I'm inspired by something, it is something visually, so taking quick mental notes from my brain and putting them on paper is a really good way for me to personally gather information.

Its amazing how something as simple as an "あ” hiragana shaved on the back of someone's head can suddenly inspired endless amounts of ideas.

Subcultures have always been a huge personal interest of mine. Even before being interested in Street Fashion culture of Japan, I can remember early internet days of researching different fashion and musical cultures, where they started, why they started, HOW they started, etc.

A recent tag/trend I have noticed online is "seapunk." It may not be so easily defined (and hey, from most people I have talked to that most would consider to be in
a specific subculture probably wouldn't consider themselves that. "Hey! I'm cult party-kei" for example.

From what I have seen, it appears that seapunk is not only about fashion, but also about music too. I'll leave the researching to you guys, but as you can see, I've attached some visuals for you to chew on. From what I'm getting, think of a bit of a "New" new wave, with early 2000's influences, especially those related to early online and gaming culture. The ocean also seems to be a huge influence in the style, with dip dyed turquoise hair and conch shelled spikes, etc.

So there is inspiration there for someone. It is always kind of fun to see a subculture rising. People wondering "How big will it get? Will it stay online? Will it get big quick and die quick? "

So basically, I whipped up this illustration pretty quickly. It may be a bit of tacky/obvious seapunk vibes, but oh well, if anything, I guess it can just be a visual for my mental note of this style.

In relation to my fascination, its not so much that I even like seapunk, or any specific subculture for that matter.
I think something for me specifically that inspired me about many fashion subcultures in Japan is that they sometimes start trends from the roots up, instead of the designer down. For example, say, platform shoes died out. Yet, a girl decides she likes platform converse, and starts wearing them in a unique way. Because of her new take on a dead trend, she gets her photo taken on the street. Before you know it, its all over street fashion web sites, FRUiTS magazine, etc. Then suddenly its a real trend in Harajuku. People online catch on as well, and by next season, the most "forward thinking" designers have brought back platform shoes to the runway, later hitting the mainstream 5 years later.

This is a bit of a fairytale (but kind of true?) example. But an interesting thing to note now especially is that many trends have been created online. Fashion Bloggers and street snap web sites for example, can bring incredibly new trends and ways of wearing clothing to even the most rural parts of the globe. Its just a matter of if the viewer is willing to carry the trend. If you like the idea, I'd say go for it!

So now, there is a bit of this also going on via tumblr. As thousands of youth post images over and over (sometimes all day long it seems, good grief), people are exposed to new things like they never have before, especially at the rate that it is going. But one interesting thing about it is that it seems to create a sense of competition for some. Like a style contest. For others, its just inspiration.

I think it will be really fun watching new design movements pop up within the next few years. I realize the internet has been around awhile, but I feel the combination of sites like tumblr, fashion bloggers, other social networking sites, and street fashion web sites getting bigger, the world will continue to see people ready to break the mold.

Bubbles is a fairly new vintage shop that opened up this year in Harajuku, Tokyo. I went there for the first time during my last visit to Japan with my friend. I met the wonderful owner, Coi-san, and got to chat with her a bit about her shop. I ended up seeing her a few other times when I was in Tokyo at her shop and at an event as well. Her shop has a really great mix of vintage, especially from the 80's, but definitely with a Harajuku twist. There is a wonderful variety of great stuff you can find around town, nor can you buy online.All of the shop staff are super cool, and even being in the store for just 10 minutes is a great experience, while the UK's "Shampoo" is often going on in the background.

When I asked on of the shop staff about the concept of the store, he paused for a moment, and said "HYPER MIX!" (In Japanese). I think its a great description..Using vintage but mixing textures, proportions, and patterns in a very Tokyo way which adds a new twist to the vintage for sure. I think that's what is so great about some vintage shops in Tokyo..They take a lot of items that people in middle-America wouldn't even want, but recreate them and make them interesting, and once desireable again.

Double Feature! Tokyo Telephone Interview and Fashion Hayley

I'm happy to share with you guys two recent features I had on two different blogs/sites.

The first I'd like to mention is an interview I did with Tokyo Telephone. Tokyo Telephone is a blog based in Koenji, Tokyo Japan. (One of my favorite areas). The interview features my work, and questions asking me about what inspires me as a designer, etc. You can get more of an idea of what my work is about at a deeper level, be sure and check it out! :)

Also, Rebecca and Samuel are the two people that run the site, and are originally from the UK. I was fortunate to meet with them a couple of times when I was in Tokyo, and they are super awesome people. I feel like they also really have a sense of what's going on with fashion in Japan, and especially with more of a movement that main stream and western Japanese fashion web sites AREN'T focusing on. They really get it, and its not cheezy. They have really great articles and photos all throughout their blog, from underground Japanese designers to the best select avant-garde and vintage clothing shops. I also would like to thank Fashion Hayley for featuring me on her fashion blog "FASHION HAYLEY" as well. Hayley bought one of my necklace designs, and decided to write about it.

Hayley is originally from Melbourne, Australia, and has relocated in Sydney for work. We met online years ago, because our similar passion for Japanese street fashion. Hayley lived in Tokyo for a long time, and we also have some mutual friends in Japan, even though we haven't met in person yet. I have been inspired by her own personal style as well, so I also wanted to create an illustration for her for the feature.

I would also like to personally thank Hayley, because she was one of my first influential artwork fans, and encouraged me to actually start blogging YEARS ago. She does super amazing styling work, and has worked with various musicians, models, etc as well. She is very talented, and definitely adds a unique twist on the whole fashion blogging culture. I have a great feeling we will meet in Tokyo someday soon! Thank you so much Hayley for the feature.

Fashionsnap.com Feature

Yesterday evening I had some exciting fun good news, and some blog error related bad news. I'll start with the good news. My friends at Tokyo Telephone tweeted me and let know that my street snap shots had gone up on www.fashionsnap.com. I had been photographed in the street in Tokyo when going to Wut Berlin before meeting a friend. It was really fun! You can check out the rest of the photos here at this direct link

Many of you may already be aware of "the bad news" if you follow my twitter or read my facebook status updates. (Sorry about that). I was a bit shocked when I realized that Google+ stores every photo from blogger onto the Google+ account. I noticed that suddenly there were old photo albums in my Google+ account, as I don't check it very often. I found a folder with too many images, so I deleted it. I did not make the connection that if I deleted this album that was on google plus, that it would do what it did. It deleted every single photo that I have ever uploaded on this blog.

It was like a nightmare. I searched all over online, and the best thing I could find was some guy working for google that basically said "if you deleted it, its too late."

Really? I wasn't even using Google+ much. No recycle bin button? No trash folder? No undo? I will say, I believe there was some slight "click ok to permanently delete" button, but again, I just wasn't thinking about it taking away every photo I had uploaded onto this blog separately through various hard drives and locations.

With that said, I apologize for anyone that has been reading my blog recently with a lot of dead images. I stayed up all night trying to upload old images for at least the first page of the blog, as I have some features from other sites going on now and that are in the works that will bring traffic to my site. I will be slowly putting the pictures back up, but don't worry. In the meantime, you can always see my art at the Lactose Intoler-Art facebook page. Or check out my tumblr HERE

I would like to say to anyone out there using new social networking sites, etc that are in BETA. Even if they are from a company like google, be very careful. Everything that I have been working on with Lactose Intoler-Art for the past few years is linked directly back to this blog, and has been. I am truly disappointed in Google+ and will no longer be using it as soon as I know that if I deactivate my account, it won't delete everything I just spent hours uploading again. Sorry for such a lengthy and wordy post, please bare with me as I fix the problem.

On a more positive note, expect more exciting things to come! As I mentioned before, new features, and also new product designs, and as always illustrations as well. For those that have been keeping up, you know I am wanting to feature events, shops, designers, and artists as well. Thank you all who have followed so long, and also those new to following, I really appreciate you!

インタラマンゴ: Intaramango Event in Tokyo- Osaka/Kansai Design Movement

When I was still in Tokyo, I went to a really great art/fashion event in Harajuku, Tokyo. It was at Vaccant, a place that normally has zine's from all over the world on the bottom floor, but they often host events on the second floor as well. It was my second time to attend an event at Vaccant, and so far they were both great events.

I realize this is a bit late, but since I have been back from Japan, I've been really busy with the holidays, catching up, and continuing to put new products in my Lactose Intoler-Art Official Online Shop and my Vintage Shop.

I feel like this event was really special, kind of like I can't fully describe it with words or even photos. The event featured very avant garde artists and designers from the Kansai/Osaka area. There was a lot of eclectic, colorful, and remake fashion going on. It was very hand made and crafted feeling, but also incredibly unique. Most of the designers do not have their own shops, but have their work available in select shops.

Outside, there were lots of colorful people, and even a Japanese summer matsuri style parade going on, but with their own artistic twist to it. They were even selling vegetables outside in a tent! It was really cool, because I felt like the design concept definitely included a mixture of old and rural Japan, even though most of it looked like a hyper mix of colorful crafting.

I went to the event with my friend Tavuchi, and we bumped into Mamy-san, the wonderful street fashion blogger behind Mamy's Wonderland who has also worked for FRUiTS magazine, and joined us as well. There were lots of shop owners, designers, etc at the event from Tokyo, and I truly believe that they were all blown away. Once you walked up the stairs of Vaccant to the second floor, it was literally like you were in a dreamland. There were several booths set up, and stuff hanging from the walls, creating a colorful cloud-like atmosphere. It was truly amazing!

It was also fun to bump into Kjeld-Duits, the webmaster behind Japanese streets, and his assistant Anzu-san. She was sporting a Lactose Intoler-Art Tote bag as you can see in the picture below. (ありがとう Anzu-さん!)

Be sure and check out the blog for the movement going on in Kansai. There is so much to look at online through blogs, because quite a few designers were involved. A lot them have twitter accounts as well..I'll leave you to the searching.

Overall, I had a feeling that even the up and coming shop owners of Tokyo really felt like this movement suddenly bursting from Osaka is really special. The Kansai area is definitely a place to watch for avant garde art and fashion.

Sweet Streets @ WWA Gallery Featuring Spank! and Chubby Bunny Pop-up Shop

So I've decided I want to slowly incorporate more designers, artists, events, and fashion shows that I am inspired by on my blog. For a long time, I have been showing mostly only my illustration work, design work, products I sell, and vintage from my online shops, etc. However, there is really so much more that interests me as an artist that I really want to share with the world as well.

I just got back from Tokyo last week. So much happened this time and it was an amazing trip. I think I will slowly share about events and things that happened from the trip onto my blog as I get the time. But for now, I want to talk about an event that happened on my way back home.

Some of you might be aware of the shops and galleries in Los Angeles, California known as JapanLA and Sweet Streets. Previously, I had done some work with them, and most recently with JapanLA for their "Kittens and Ice Cream" event, to raise money for charity related to the disaster that happened earlier in northern Japan this year.

Although I was unable to attend the event at that time, I had really wanted to meet the people behind Sweet Streets and JapanLA.

While I was in Tokyo, my friend Tavuchi, the owner of the "Spank!" used clothing shops in Tokyo told me about an event that would be in LA. I decided to arrange a stop in LA on the way back home so that I could attend her event before going home for the Holidays.

The event was held at the WWA Gallery in Culver City, California. It featured a pop up shop collaboration between Tavuchi's shop "Spank!" and the label "Chubby Bunny" by Michelle Nguyen. Both shops/lines include a lot of 80's inspiration, mixed with modern Japanese pop-culture, and a lot of pastel!

Inside, there was a DJ, and lots of art on the walls that matched the concept of the day's show. Lots of ice-creamy bright colors, and a lot of "kawaii." The pop-up shop was in the back of the store, and there was a long line that had formed just to get in and look around the pop-up shop alone!

I think the craziest thing that nobody expected was that as the show went on, a lot of people had to wait outside to get in the building. Apparently there was limited space, and too many guests! As the night progressed, I'm pretty sure everyone got to at least go in and experience it (or at least I hope so!)

There was also a fashion show at 8:00pm. The event began at 7:00 and was scheduled to end at 10:00, but they ended up leaving it open later, so that everyone could join in eventually. The fashion show was great! The entire gallery was suddenly split into two, and suddenly, Tavuchi and Michelle were prancing down the runway, quickly followed by their cute models with matching, similar styles. There was definitely a sense of Pastel Paparazzi in the air!

As the event settled down, I finally got to briefly chat with some of the people that made the show happen. It was great to meet all the people that I had been in touch with online, and those who helped me sell my art in LA. I even got to meet some fans that knew of my work! I was really glad I could meet so many awesome people. I think the coolest thing about the event was just experiencing a subcultural side of Japanese culture being appreciated in the USA. It is interesting to see much of the original concept of "Spank!" came from 1980's/early 90's American pop culture.Stuff that was on sale at Kmart back then. However, the subcultural "Harajuku feeling" of the night was definitely apparent, which of course is rooted in Japanese origin. It was a really nice contrast. I hope LA and Tokyo can keep inspiring each other, because the hyper-mix of cultures that comes out in between is truly awesome.

This illustration was inspired by people I saw on the streets of Harajuku. I wanted to add a crop detailed shot to encourage everyone to blow up the minimized pictures on this blog. I feel that there is a more texture and detail that is missed when they are minimized.

Recently, I love the idea of really mixing unique but slightly awkward patterns and textures. It is a bit interesting to see a lot of strange Japanese hiragana and katakana popping up on Japanese "remake" style items. The idea of using Japanese writing instead of English has typically been thought of as a bit unfashionable to most Japanese I believe, but now it is slowly becoming on trend with a more underground street fashion following. Notice the "ス" symbol katakana suspenders.

I finally made it to Tokyo! Im so happy to see my friends. Im not going to post a lot on my blog about Tokyo, I want to keep it mostly about my art. However, I wanted to share that I was on Tokyo Boppers blog HERE! Thank you so much!ありがとうございました！ Yesterday I went to Harajuku with a friend. I got to try on shoes at Tokyo Bopper, and they took my picture while there. They do a daily picture feed of their customers that come into the store. It was really fun! I didnt think they would have my size, but even though the size translated(?) a bit different, suprisingly they fit my feet! I was really glad. Glasses Galore!

For some reason, I've been really inspired by large glasses for a long time. I remember it was not SO long ago that people didn't even wear wayfarers, or oversized shades. I feel like there was a period after all of the decades of detailed and oversized glasses that the trend switched to small, more rectangular less detailed frames. (Late 90's early 00's).

However, I think as the world becomes more connected, and an emphasis on individual style becomes more important, even in mainstream fashion, we have been seeing eyewear trends change rapidly. It is cool to see that on a lot of fashion blogs and street style web sites, you can find unique glasses ranging from the late 1800's to the mid 90's, and they still look cool and relevant because of the way people mix them and wear them.

Even on some of my earlier illustrations, I was really inspired by what some probably considered awkward or tacky at the time, but really big "ugly" "grandma" 80s frames. Although I do believe the trends are always changing, I wonder how long "emphasis on individuality" will be "cool?"

Either way, recently I have listed all sorts of glasses to my online vintage/etsy shop which you can see here: Lactose Intoler-Art Vintage Etsy Shop They have ranged from 1940s green lensed steam punk esque safety goggles, to cat eye glasses, to oversized 1980s artsy grandma, to thin wired 90s glasses. Its fun to try something that you may have considered "out of the norm" at one point, and to just enjoy what you wear.

I have noticed that people especially those who seem to closely resemble the "Tokyo Bopper" concept/style are doing it the most. You never know what's going to be next on the streets of Tokyo! One of the biggest forms of flattery for me when it comes to my illustration work is when the same people that I am inspired by like what I do. Since I have started this blog years ago, I have met so many people that I consider a huge blessing to have come in contact with. Thanks to the internet, the world can connect people with unique interests that would not likely normally be able to meet. I know this is kind of stating the obvious, but just to think that common internet access has not been around for an EXTREMELY long time is a bit crazy.

A great example of someone liking my work that I am also inspired by was when Tavuchi featured me on her blog. Through it, a reader, the lovely Maina-chan saw my work, and found me on facebook. She sent me the sweetest email message and told me she had found me through Tavuchi's blog. Maina's style is really cool, its like the epitome of the type of Tokyo street fashion that I love. After sending several messages in mixed Japanese and English, I am honored to call her a friend!

She sent me a picture that she had taken for some of her friends, and I decided to draw her. I can't wait to go to Tokyo later this summer and meet her in person.

TUNE Fan and Slime

Its been a great summer so far. I know a lot of times I do not make my blog really personal, but sometimes I just feel like writing. All summer I have been working on spending a lot of time making new designs, promoting my work, and creating new products for the online store. Ultimately I'm preparing and anxiously awaiting my next trip to Japan later this summer. While blogging, working, etc, I have been intentional on keeping up with my favorite blogs, and street fashion web sites, not only to keep up with what's new, but to be inspired. (For example the ridiculous amount of updates on my tumblr last month).

One thing I've noticed recently that a lot of bloggers and street fashion web sites are posting images of people with unnaturally colored hair. Sure, there are always kids who choose to put blue, purple, or green in their hair, but it seems especially within the past couple of years, Its been popping up on the blogosphere a lot more. Growing up, unnatural hair color was always a bit frowned upon. I can understand why, as most of the people I came in contact with had it done in a way that looked really cheap and trashy. However, recently I've seen a lot of really cool hairstyles that mix bits of color into hair.I love it when its done tastefully.

As a lot of you know, I'm not only really inspired by street fashion, (especially in Tokyo) but by the late 80's, early 90's, and grunge-y Nickelodeon types of cartoons.
In the latest issue of FRUiTS magazine, a lot of people particularly had green in their hair. Personally, I love it! Its like the Nickelodeon slime/ninja turtles look incorporated into daily life.

One thing that keeps me interested and constantly looking at Japanese street fashion is not only the fact that it is always changing, but mostly because a lot of it is just kids that truly want to mix their hobbies, inspirations, and even favorite items into their style. Personal expression can be fun when its not about impressing somebody by the brand you wear, but wearing what you truly love, because it is an expression of you.

These new illustrations are inspired by things such as the early Rugrats cartoons, FRUiTS and TUNE magazine, New Wave 80's surf and skate textiles, Oversized glasses, and SLIME! Why not?

Tavuchi and Her Bear Bag Illustration

This is a new illustration I did of the awesome Tavuchi, owner of the "Spank!" used/vintage clothing stores in Tokyo, Japan. I'm sure most of my followers are familiar with Tavuchi and her shops if you read my blog often, but if you are new, Tavuchi is a very influential person in the Tokyo street fashion scene. One thing that I like so much about Tavuchi is that she has always stayed true to her concept of late 80's/early 90's cute, with her own personal twist. Many people have become fans of her stores and personal style not only in Tokyo, but internationally as well. It is amazing how when street fashion trends change, she is not defined by them, but still adapts and makes something interesting and relevant to people in Tokyo today. However, she is definitely a trend starter as well, as you can see many people on street fashion web sites and magazines that love what the "Spank!" brand has become, with a tribe of followers who also make it their own. The inspiration for this illustration is the matching green streaks with the green patched bear. I imagine it as an unzippable belt/fanny pack with stuffed animal parts patch worked together. I would love to see someone make it! If anyone does anything like this, I can possibly feature you on my blog, and could even deliver it to Tavuchi for you! :)

I just wanted to thank everyone who went to JapanLA and attended the Kittens and Ice Cream event. I was glad that my friend Ara was able to go and take pics and report about it. Ara is a friend I met online back in the myspace days through mutual friends and an interest in Tokyo street fashion and culture. She particularly likes vintage fashion and antique clothing, and even told me of some great stores I had missed in Tokyo such as Birthdeath that I had never been to before. She is from Seoul and is an all around talented girl, she can draw, design, speak Korean, Japanese, and English well, and has had experience doing make up for some models in Seoul as well. Kittens and Ice Cream

To celebrate their 5th year anniversary, JapanLA is having a “Kittens & Ice Cream” art show and party on June 4 from 7-10 pm.They will be featuring artists all over the world for Part of the “Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue & Support.” I will have some of my personal work there, including necklaces, and original art prints. My Left Hand Hurts!

Today was a free day for me! Right now, I'm preparing to go back to Tokyo as soon as possible..With Tokyo in mind, I've been spending a lot of my free time connecting with friends in Japan and figuring out plans, as well as constantly looking at street fashion images and any kind of art related to Tokyo.. Last night I had the itch to create some new work around 3AM, and spent much of today working as well, because I was so inspired! I don't know if any of you can relate, but sometimes creativity can come in bursts, where you want to just keep drawing/designing/singing/writing, etc without stopping!

So that's why my left hand hurts. Ha.

I plan to go to Tokyo by at least August. One of my plans is to work with a volunteer organization that is directly connected to helping people that were affected by the earthquake and tsunami which recently happened. I also can't wait to see my friends, and hopefully make new friends and conections as well! Here are some of the new illustrations I've came up with within the past few days.

Tavuchi+Lactose Intoler-Art Featured

Recently I sent a thank you package to the amazing Tavuchi to her shop in Koenji Japan, to thank her for being so amazing and getting into FRUITS magazine for the second time. The package consisted of 80's treasures and things that I hoped would match her taste that I had found, such as pinback buttons, glasses, and some small vintage clothing pieces as well. I also included a necklace I did that was inspired by Tavuchi's stores and concept, and before I knew it, she was out walking the streets of Harajuku not only wearing the buttons and glasses I sent, but the necklace as well.

Suddenly, FRUITS magazine uploaded an image on their twitter of Tavuchi filling out the form to be in FRUITS magazine. She told me that other sites snapped her as well. So far, Tokyo Fashion (www.tokyofashion.com) is the first one online to upload the pictures. Be sure and check them out!

New illustration in high resolution. I apologize to anyone who may have been seeing the images in lower resolution when they were not blown up. Blogger is having some problems with the resolution of highly detailed images when they are shrunk down. All of the pictures should be much crisper, and always remember to blow up the illustratrions and photos on the blog as well to get the full details! There is a lot you might miss if you only look at the small images. :) Also..I have a lot of new buttons, and more necklaces and totes are on the way as well, and of course, there is a constant stream of vintage going into the etsy shop.

Pray for Japan+Give to Japan! **UPDATE!

As many of you I’m sure are already aware of the earthquake in Japan, please continue to pray and support Japan in this hard time. It has been a challenging past few days for me, but it cannot compare to those most personally impacted by it IN Japan. I know it will continue to be a struggle for the people all over Japan, but especially in the areas hardest hit. I personally have friends and people I love and am very close to in Japan after spending time there. I was just in Sendai last summer. I couldn't contact one of my friends who lived in one of the northeastern areas for over 24 hours, and neither could his girlfriend. It was incredibly terrifying. Fortunately everyone I know is safe now, and I did hear that friend's family is safe, but I have a friend who lost someone.

I am wanting to do my part and I am hoping you can too. Please continue to keep Japan in your prayers, and donate to charity as well.
**EDIT-I posted before that I would be offering some artwork for Japan that I'm going to sell to donate towards relief efforts. I got an almost immediate response because the earthquake had just happened, and he told me he was heading straight to northern Japan to report on it. Anyway, this is very serious and many people are hurting. Please do not take this issue lightly, and continue to lift up those in Japan and those affected by the situation. JAPAN, we love you.

"Sobakasu" is the word for freckles in Japanese. On this newest illustration, I was inspired by that. My sister has always had lots of freckles on her face, and for some reason I always thought that was unique, and really cool. I remember seeing an old section in a Japanese magazine from around 2006 where Japanese girls were drawing freckles on their own faces as kind of a make up trend. I've heard some people say that freckles mean somebody is weak, but for me, I think it is really cute and attractive when girls have cute freckles! So to all the freckle faces out there, this illustration is for you! I also wanted to do a couple of new photo illustrations. The one with two girls on it is at one of my favorite places to walk around and watch people in Tokyo, called "Cat Street" in Harajuku. A lot of street fashion photos that you see are taken right here on this street.

This morning at about 4:30AM I suddenly had creative juices flowing through my brain, and I made a couple of new illustrations. They are both kind of inspired by the idea of "Aato-kei", or "Artistic style" as I've mentioned a bit before. Its kind of a concept that I think could do well in Tokyo. I've seen some people with similar style in TUNE magazine, but its very rare. Elements of paint splatters, overalls, late 80's, early 90's, and geometric shapes. Lots of oversized proportions and big glasses, miss-matched, and colorful. Think previous art movements like the early Bauhaus movement and those unique styles you see kids wear that go to art school. These two illustrations do not necessarily match that concept, but they still contain elements of "Artistic Style." Who knows, maybe it will be the next Japanese fashion subculture tribe.

Tavuchi in Oklahoma!

As I announced before, my friend Tavuchi who owns the "Spank!" shops in Tokyo, came to Oklahoma City for a visit. It was a really good and crazy trip...

It was crazy because we had the biggest snow storm we've probably had in years. In Oklahoma, we're not usually prepared for snow storms like this, there's not enough snow plows, machinery, etc. With that said, everything shuts down. So when Tavuchi first got here, a lot of the thrift shops closed early, due to the weather. So she came over to my apartment, and my sister cooked her biscuits and gravy (Oklahoma style)..She loved it!

Another reason Tavuchi came here was to practice her driving, so we drove all around the city in the snow, very slowly!楽しかった!

The next few days we went to many antique stores, thrift stores, and vintage shops. Tavuchi found some great deals...! Including a Unicorn toy, and a huge green teddy bear!

But I think her favorite, for her "personal collection" of treasures, was this crocheted pastel sweater, probably made by a great-grannie Okie.

I really look forward to going back to Tavuchi's shops and seeing some of the things she bought in Oklahoma. Tavuchi is not only extremely influential in the underground street fashion scene in Tokyo, but she is genuinely a super kind and awesome person. I really enjoyed our time together.

Hey guys! I just wanted to announce something that I'm VERY excited about. Right now and in the near future, I am going to be working with a project/web site, called "Made With Japan." Made with Japan is a bilingual web site that features people, places, artists, designers, and shops that influence or are highly interested in modern Japanese culture. The web site hopes to make people aware of a side of Japan that most people may not be used to seeing.

I hope everyone is enjoying their Holiday Season. I have had the pleasure of going back to my hometown and just relaxing with the family. After my art show and getting lots of merchandise prepared, I really needed it. I'm really excited that two local shops are now carrying my work. I'm hoping that the online store will come soon as well. For anyone around the Oklahoma City area, check out DNA Galleries in the Plaza District, or Bohemian Spirit Vintage on West Britton Road (I had blogged about this shop before.)

I've really enjoyed a lot of the street fashion shots from RIDSNAP lately. I've noticed a lot of this early 00's look coming back. In Tokyo, it seems that once something is outdated, its cool again. The high platform Converse shoes were inspired by pictures I've seen online, and came into this illustration. I'm also really liking all of the unnaturally dyed hair on kids too. I hope you like these new illustrations. Someone had posted before that they were having trouble with comments. If anyone experiences this, it would be great if you could shoot me an email, and I will try to get it fixed.

KATAKANA CRAZY!

Recently, I've had so much going on getting ready for the art show. I'm so excited, and I have gotten so much stuff made. Its been super exciting getting to spend time just making tons of art. I really get a thrill out of it. I'm still working towards getting my degree though, so I can get over to Japan as soon as possible to live that "live there for at least one year" dream.

In the meantime, I sit in class. I sit in class and doodle. I just sit there and think about design concepts and stuff I can make later. I sketch thoughts, but everything comes out into an illustrated image.

So today during one of my really long classes, I just started thinking about how cool Katakana characters look. For those of you that don't know, Katakana is one of the 3 writing styles in Japanese writing. It is used for foreign or non native Japanese words. I've noticed a lot of the street style sites and conceptual clothing shops have started integrating a little more of Japanese culture and pop culture into things that they are wearing, specifically katakana on bags and on buttons.It could have easily been mistaken for awhile that most of the trends in Tokyo are taken from completely new brands, but more specifically vintage or used American clothing. It is interesting to see how things hit their peak, and then there seems to be a need to shift back to the culture they are part of...Which makes sense to be suddenly seeing anime and Japanese symbols into what many could say is remixed American fashion.

Wow. I didn't mean to go into all of that. I'm writing a research paper on something kind of similar to that, so that's probably why. The point is, with all of this art show/design/nothing in mind, I sketched tons of katakana. And here it is in my art. I hope you like it.

Oh, and I finally got my copy of the new FRUiTS magazine with my bag in it. I was super excited to see the picture of Tavuchi-san holding it...But it was kind of funny because it said in Japanese "Bag: Brandon's." Hahahaha. Too bad it didn't get "Lactose Intoler-Art." I can always hope for next time, right?

The Virgin Mary Vintage Shop+Illustration

Today I did an inspiration of one of my favorite personal style icons of underground Japanese street fashion. Her name is Ari-san, and she is the owner of "The Virgin Mary" in Tokyo, Japan. "The Virgin Mary" is a vintage clothing store in Shibuya. Ari-san is the same girl who was a part of "Cult Party" in Koenji. The new shop has gained a lot of popularity with the underground Tokyo street fashion scene. In my opinion, Ari-san is one of the most influential people in Japanese fashion right now, as far as subcultural relevance. Many people may be familiar with "dolly-kei" or "mori-gal." However, Ari-san apparently likes her style to be called "Cult Party-Kei," and she has ever right to coin her own name for this style. It is very original, mixing antique vintage, frills, and random sheer homemade elements into fashion.

I was able to go to both "Cult Party" (when it was open), and "The Virgin Mary." Ari-san wasn't there this time, but one of her great shop staff girls was. Here is a picture of me and her. It was actually the same day I met with Tavuchi-san from Spank!.

I think one of the favorite things I like about her concept that also seems to reign subconciously with philosophy behind Japanese fashion is that some things that are not perfect are still pretty. Damaged, stained, and dirty is sometimes okay when its actually done right. I appreciate Japanese fashion for taking things that many in the west may consider wasting, and appreciating it because it has a story. Not only do they appreciate it, but they wear it in some of the most unique and interesting ways ever.

I hope that Ari-san continues to be successful in her career. She also has her own blog on DROPTOKYO's web site. Its http://ariari.droptokyo.com/blogs/ . I applaud the Tokyo street fashion scene for always staying useful, innovative, and ahead of the game. If only I could see some of these kids running around the west. Cult Party-Kei USA anyone? I'm down!

When I was in Tokyo this summer, I had a really fun and random opportunity. If any of you are familiar with Japanese fashion magazines, you may know "Men's Non-No" or "Popeye." When I was in Shibuya, I got scouted to be a model by a guy claiming to work an assistant connected to both companies.

Normally, I wouldn't have been in Japan long enough in order to see if I could stay and do the modeling, but this summer, I ended up getting to stay an extra two weeks.

As I told my host family, they thought it may have been kind of shady, so they called. Next thing I knew, I woke up to catch the early train to Shibuya station, and met at the Hachiko statue. It was weird because there was hardly anybody there compared to the night crowd.

Before I knew it, I was in a van full of Europeans. The 4 other guys had also been scouted, and Magda, the girl from Poland was the only professional model. We made our way to Chiba, and took photos there.

The photoshoot ended up being in Popeye Magazine. It was for BEAMS. It was a really fun day and a great shoot, and I had never done anything like that before. I am the guy with the crazy hair in the front with the huge gray and blue sweater. I was the only native English speaker, everybody else spoke French, Polish, or German.

I know this isn't really related to my illustrations necessarily, but for those of you interested in Japanese fashion (which I know a lot of my readers are), I thought you may find this interesting! I hadn't done an illustration of an actual person in awhile. I was really inspired by this specific shot of my friend Tavuchi that I saw on RIDSNAP. I love that she is still true to her style here, but its not too typical. I love everything about the style that is going on in Tokyo right now.

I remember when I met Tavuchi that she expressed that Harajuku is changing. It is becoming a "fast fashion" place now, and the true Harajuku that once was is slowly dying out. Thankfully, there are still plenty of interesting people that crawl through the backstreets, but will Koenji be the next early Harajuku?

My favorite place in all of Tokyo to watch people is on Omotesando street in Harajuku. People pass by here every afternoon in order to get their picture taken. So many photographers from various magazines sit on the bicycle racks, hoping to get the the shots they need. My favorite spot to sit is right in front of the Lawson Convenience store. It is so fun to watch people hanging out, that are totally in tune with the epitome of street fashion culture. Kids dressing extremely expressive and creatively, hoping for someone to take their picture. The illustration I did of the girls sitting on the bicycle rack is inspired by those moments, as well as a snapshot I took when I was in Tokyo last. I hope you enjoy it! (Click to blow it up!)

The inspiration from this next illustration grew out one object. A big bow, that has some kind of old teddybear, stuffed animal type of texture. After that, I developed the whole character around that. I also wanted to include Katakana writing on her somewhere. I've noticed that a lot of the coolest kids in Tokyo are starting to incorporate Japanese characters, whether anime or just symbols, into their used clothing/high fashion style, etc. That's one thing that is so great about Tokyo fashion. Making the uncool cool again, and mixing stuff up like crazy.

Quilt! 80's Futuristic+Purple Hair!

I think was my trip to Tokyo+constant checkings on street fashion web sites like droptokyo, RIDSNAP, Japanesestreets, and others+a video on Tavuchi-san's blog that stirred up the inspiration for this character.

On Tavuchi's blog...There was a video that reminded me a lot of the old late 80's/early 90's cartoons that are now outdated, but many times had a "futuristic" theme. I think its really interesting to see era's from the past ideas of the future. Especially from that era. Maybe this is what originally gave me the idea that Tokyo was this futuristic-like city. Songs like "Mr. Roboto" from the Styx. Even games like Ducktales for the NES...Like this futuristc/outer-space level are inspriational!
One of my favorite things to draw on this image was the quilt skirt. I've seen a lot of that lately. I noticed in Tokyo that some of my favorite shops and shop owners were making things like raggedy old quilts that nobody wants in the states into something artistic, and creative.

New Art! I'm thinking Green

This is my first computer illustration I have done since I went to Tokyo. It was really crazy going this long without doing this kind of thing. Hopefully you can expect more soon. I have some scans I may want to do as well.

Also..I appreciate all the comments, readers, and responses I have gotten lately. I'm happy to announce this blog now has over 100 followers! Thank you so much.

My inspiration for this illustration was bold textile print, as well as green. Right now I'm really interested in the mixing of bold print with bold print. I guess my illustrations have always been pretty mixed print with mixed print, but after seeing some great kids on the street in Tokyo, I'm really inspired by creating other options and styes uses really bold prints mixed together that still looks really cool and unique.

I also haven't seen a lot of green in awhile, and would like to see it returning. I recently went to a flea market, and found a great old toy from the early 90's. It was a battle troll "Punk Troll" to be exact. Although I had many battle trolls as a kid, I never had this one. He is almost all black and electric green.

As I saw a lot of kids in Tokyo AND Seoul rocking the black 1991, 1992 look..I predict that we will start to see more green mixed into fashion, but toned down with black or gray. I hope you like this new illustration! I'm so inspired right now.

BLOG FEATURE! WereThunder

So as some of you may know, I was able to also visit Seoul this summer. It was an amazing trip. Thanks to one of my friends, I got to hang out with the cool Hana of WereThunder, also shop staff at AproGod. He and his friend Hanna are really great. They are deeply connected to the undeground Seoul Street fashion scene. I was so happy to meet them so that they could show me around. He has even been IN Tune magazine! This is my dream, as well as Cracker Your Wardrobe, a Korean influential fashion magazine, numerous times.

Hana also speaks fluent Japanese, and is very interested in Japanese fashion as well. In fact, his girlfriend goes to the famous Bunka in Tokyo, which he also plans to attend later to develop his own brand.

Please check out his blog. Its worth a look for Japanese, Korean, American, or anyone interested in the Seoul underground fashion scene.

I applaud people like Hana, because at least to my perception, it may be a little more difficult to be as avant-garde in Seoul compared to Tokyo. Hana and the people he knows remain true to who they really are, and are potentially a huge part of a growing movement in Seoul. Hana and Hanna, if you read this, it was AMAZING meeting you. I wish you all the best.

Well, I have been in Tokyo since July 8th. It has been an AMAZING experience as usual.

This post doesnt really contain any new artwork, but some exciting news.

Some of you that are familiar with Japanese street fashion may know of the famous Tavuchi-san. She is the owner of select used clothing shops, and has been featured on basically every well-known street fashion publication and web site. She is famous for introducing American late 80s early 90s style vintage into street fashion culture in a way that is relevant to Tokyo fashion subcultures today.

As some of you know, I did an illustration of her before I went to Japan. I ended up emailing it to her, and she loved it. So, I had a custom tote bag design ordered for her to give as a gift to Japan, because we would meet.

Im glad I did. She ended up showing lots of cool street fashion kids the bag, I was so happy. The coolest thing that happened though was this....

Some of you may know fo the magazines STREET, FRUiTS, and TUNE. They are probably the most famous street fashion magazines in Japan, if not the world. FRUiTS has been a revolutionary part of changing fashion culture in Japan. FRUiTS features pictures of just women on the street, TUNE with men on the street, and STREET featuring international street fashion.

I ended up meeting the owner of all 3 of these magazines, Mami-san. She was incredibly kind and supportive. The coolest thing that happened was she ended up taking a picture of Tavuchi-san holding my bag with my illustrations on it, to hopefully be in FRUiTS! I will keep you guys posted on that status for sure.

I am looking for more and more ways to get my art out to the world. My dream is to sell my designs on products in very select shops in Tokyo, and maybe even around the world. What are you guys thoughts? What is something you would like to see with my artwork on it? Products? Any collaborations? I currently have some stuff in the works. Would like to get your opinions. Today I decided to do a newer illustration of one of my favorite and most inspiring people. I had drawn her before, but it was a long time ago. Tavuchi-san is famous for her shops across Tokyo, such as "Spank!," "Ticket to Darling," and a few more. She has been innovative in her own sense of mixing late 1980's fashion into something that is relevant to the fashionable neighborhoods of Tokyo today. One of her shop staff members in the Shibuya store told me that they are also very inspired by Full House. How cool! Tavuchi-san is also a closer friend of a friend known as "Fashion Hayley", a stylish girl from Melbourne who is also very interested in Tokyo street fashion and culture. She was actually the one who got me started blooging. Arigatou Hayley-chan! haha

I was fortunate to meet Tavuchi-san when I went to Japan once. She seemed very sweet and shy! I woud love to meet her again someday...

Today was a free day for me. It was nice to browse lots of sites that give me inspiration. Right now, I'm really interested in design that has kind of a contrast between minimal/simple, but also complicated. What I mean is maybe using minimal colors, peices, but making them really interesting. When using design minimally though, I think its interesting when the minimal that IS used is actually very bold, such as interesting form, bright colors...Etc.

These last few days I've been really interested in Avant-Garde style. When fashion becomes something creative and unique, that is when it is truly appealing in my opinion. The inspiration of this illustration was based on Avant-Garde style, strange shapes, and Japanese hairstyles with crazy intense colors. RIDSNAP Illustration

RIDSNAP is probably my favorite street fashion site on the web. I have personally met the owner and some of the people behind the scenes. I think one of the reasons I love it so much is not only because they capture the coolest styles from my favorite area of Tokyo (Ura-Harajuku), but because the people they seem to take pictures of are absolutely amazing and interesting in some way. They are snapping people that some could say are possibly up to 5 years ahead of trends in the west. That's one thing that's so great about Tokyo. People take style and they are creative with it. Trends are started sometimes by being anti-trend, or just starting something completely true to theirselves and their personality. Then street style sites and magazines like RIDSNAP pick up on this oiginality, and before you know it, all the coolest kids in Tokyo are mimicking these styles in their own way. Well, I'm going to Tokyo and Seoul this summer. I really can't wait. Recently, I've been trying to find some more good sites for Seoul street fashion. I searched and found a blog for the brand "Viva H.", which is a label I had previously featured on this blog before. This inspiration is somewhat inspired by street fashion in Seoul, and all of those cute Korean girls with the Kawakubo-esque hairdo's. Sorry for the lack of posts lately! Been super busy. In some of my free time, I've been really interested in antique clothing style, mostly from sources like the RIDSNAP street fashion web site, which features pictuers of people in Tokyo, and watching part of a 1920's silent film. The inspiration for this illustration is a conceptual street fashion style subculture. 1920's Punk. Flapper punk? Who knows. One thing that I enjoy so much about street fashion in Tokyo is that so many new styles and fashion subcultures are always coming up and evolving. So I want to possibly start doing more features of my favorite designers, artists, etc, that I feel are somewhat relevant to the blog.

When I was in Tokyo over New Years, I found a great publication called "LIPP" in the basement of LaForet in Harajuku. I instantly fell in love with the cheap illustration/design publication.

One of my favorite artists in the publication was Nozomi Miyazaki. Her quirky character-based illustrations instantly caught my eye. (Maybe because I also do quirky character-based illustrations?) haha

There was a link to her blog which I instantly added, and contacted her right away! We are now online friends, and I am happy to support her art.

She say's that her style is very influenced by American fashion. I feel like we are somewhat the reverse of each other. Me being an American guy doing character drawings inspired by Tokyo street fashion cultlure, and Nozomi-san being a Japanese girl inspired by American fashion. Its just really cool to me!

Her work is very quirky, and really fun! The colors are bright and vivid, but my favorite thing about them is kimo-kawa, but amazing illustration style. This is the kind of art that I really enjoy seeing. She has been featured in various publications as well, and I wish her the best of success!
